4 Things Businesses Should Avoid When Creating A Website
Here's some mistakes that you should try and avoid when building a website for your business. 1) Unimportant - Too simple This is probably one of the biggest mistakes made by business when they create a website. Nothing is clearly explained, the content is dull and useless and serves no purpose whatsoever. A website represents your company and it can make or break you. Don't put up your offline brochure material and expect people to find it valuable. Use fresh, interesting content that will make your visitors stay. 2) Honey, I ruined the company - Website Overkill This is a mistake that is often repeated on a lot of company websites. a) Your website is overloaded with useless content that makes your site look like it was created by a bunch of five year olds with crayons, on a sugar high. Don't make your visitors sit and wait for a site to load that is just a bunch of text on a website. Usually a site that contains heavy use of graphics which take forever to load, and make the site look like it was created in Microsoft Word on a $40 budget fall into this category. Your website needs a purpose and content to explain and voice your purpose well. b) If your website contains a flash intro page or anything similar, kiss most of your visitors goodbye. Intro pages serve no purpose other than to try and show off, and usually people get sick of waiting for them to load. Get to the point and make your websites point known within the first 8 seconds of the user loading your site. Bigger is not better in the web development industry. 3) Free Web Site with Purchase of a can of cola Yeah, it's almost got to that point. Web sites for free! Anyone can have one like giving away a promotional magnet for my refrigerator (actually promotional magnets are much more effective). Costs nothing, design it in minutes. However, most are worth nothing and are a waste of time and effort. 4) Over Priced and Difficult to Change The business owner looking for something really "special". Cost is not the issue. This mistake can have significant ramifications because you can spend a lot of money and then realise you need something different. Make sure you get a site that you can change easily. Not a site that the company you hired can change easily, but that you can change. Make sure YOU see how easy it is to change before you agree. Web sites offer you the opportunity to try different ideas, promotions and services quickly. The Web site you launch today will not be the Web site you need in six months. Businesses are reluctant to re-design or change Web sites because of cost and experience. Make sure that the Web site you buy at a minimum is database driven, supports templates, and can be changed by anyone, not just the "original developer". |
